The mission of the Ã‰coles de Santé Publique de Kinshasa, Kinshasa School of Public Health, is to contribute to the post-graduate training of all public health professionals, periodically retrain all types of personnel working in the public health sector, provide services to the community to improve their well-being, and conduct research to improve knowledge of public health issues. The Kinshasa School of Public Health is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Pierre Akilimali.

º£½Ç»»ÆÞ uses innovative mobile technology to support low-cost, rapid-turnaround surveys monitoring key health and development indicators. Surveys are completed by resident enumerators, uploaded to a central server via a mobile data network, cleaned and analyzed. Results are disseminated shortly after.

Principal Investigator

Pierre Akilimali

Pierre Z. Akilimali, PhD, MD, MPH

Dr. Akilimali is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the Kinshasa School of Medicine and the Kinshasa School of Public Health, University of Kinshasa. He has extensive research experience in HIV and family planning program evaluation and has accrued over 10 years of research experience in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His current research focuses on behavioral determinants of HIV and Reproductive Health. He holds an MD, a master in Health Economics, a Masters of Advanced Study (DEA) in Biostatistics and Epidemiology and PhD from The Kinshasa School of Public Health. His work on º£½Ç»»ÆÞ builds upon a longstanding collaboration of Kinshasa University with the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health.

Dr Dynah Kayembe

Dynah Kayembe, MD, MPH

Dr. Dynah Kayembe is a field coordinator for º£½Ç»»ÆÞ DRC. She is a doctor by training and holds a master's degree in public health. She has more than six years experience in adolescent health and well-being, family planning and contraception among young people. She has nearly 10 years experience conducting, supervising and coordinating field activities. The majority of her research has focused on adolescents and family planning, with a particular focus on contraception among adolescents.

Gloria Mbuya

Gloria Mbuya Mutala

Gloria Mbuya Mutala holds a degree in communication and journalism from the University of Kinshasa. She manages communication for the º£½Ç»»ÆÞ/DRC team at the School of Public Health of the University of Kinshasa. For almost 10 years, she was the news anchor of one of the most watched television channels in DRC: Télé 50. She also has rich experience in web journalism after having worked for more than 4 years on one of the most important digital media in DRC: 7SUR7.CD. Gloria is skilled in both digital and traditional communication tools. 

Senior Data Manager and Analyst

Michel Kayembe Bikulu

Michel Kayembe Bikulu

Michel holds a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. He is currently a computer scientist and data manager in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health of the University of Kinshasa, where he is responsible for the management of survey data. He is also a humanitarian worker.

Maurice Kabango Mutuale

Maurice holds a Bachelor's degree in Physical Science, with a specialization in computer science and electronics from the University of Kinshasa. Maurice ensures that any technical problems are addressed and that all electronic equipment are well maintained and in good working order. Maurice assists in identifying and correcting errors in data transmissions. He also provides quality control support and assists with the training of supervisors and resident enumerators.

Sandra Mapatano 

Sandra holds a degree in public international law from the University of Kinshasa. She is an administrative and logistics assistant for º£½Ç»»ÆÞ DRC at the School of Public Health at the University of Kinshasa. She has more than 10 years experience in several political and parliamentary offices. 

Founding Principal Investigator

Dr. Patrick Kayembe

Dr. Patrick Kayembe was the principal investigator for º£½Ç»»ÆÞ DRC from 2013 until his passing in 2020. Patrick’s exceptional breadth of experience spanned the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Ebola virus response, polio eradication, vaccination, family planning access and use, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic response. Patrick was an integral part of key public health initiatives in the DRC for more than 40 years and his loss is felt deeply by the public health community around the world. Read our tribute to Patrick here.
