Public access to º£½Ç»»ÆÞ datasets is granted in a layered approach, on a case-by-case basis. View the full list of currently available datasets and request access. Approval will be granted by the program country's Principal Investigator(s) and/or º£½Ç»»ÆÞ's coordinating center in Baltimore. Following protocols guided by the Institutional Review Board for human subjects research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and country partner institutions, de-identified data will be made available. º£½Ç»»ÆÞ will review all submitted requests and grant access to indicated datasets or contact users for additional information if needed, and will share electronic copies of the data files with relevant supporting documentation.
The COVID-19 pandemic complicated º£½Ç»»ÆÞ's data collection schedule. The current collection schedule may be found here.
Types of Datasets
When available, users will be able to the following types of survey datasets for each country and round: (1) Household and Female; (2) Service Delivery Point; (3) Client Exit Interviews; (4) GPS.
1. Household and Female
The household and individual female merged dataset is composed of:
Household data: each household selected into the survey will have a unique identifier, and each member of the selected household will constitute one record in the dataset. Data obtained at the household level include information from the household roster and basic information about the household, such as ownership of livestock and durable goods, a household wealth index, as well as characteristics of the dwelling unit, including wall, floor and roof material, water sources, and sanitation facilities.
Individual Female data: data include individual records for each eligible female identified in the household roster of selected households. Included are measures of education; marriage; fertility and fertility preferences; family planning access, choice, and use; quality of family planning services; and exposure to family planning media messages. The family planning data collected are confined to those needed for FP2020 indicators.
2. Service Delivery Point
SDP datasets are available in countries and survey rounds where facility-based surveys are conducted.
Each health service delivery point is classified as one record. Variables include information about the provision and quality of reproductive health services and products, integration of health services, as well as water and sanitation within the health service delivery point. All survey datasets provided will include both interviews completed, and interviews attempted but not completed. Geographic information provided is limited to the primary sampling unit and the largest regional identifier (region, state, county, etc.), allowing for national and sub-national estimates.
3. Client Exit Interviews (baseline and follow-up)
º£½Ç»»ÆÞ collects information from family planning clients at health facilities in the º£½Ç»»ÆÞ sample. This information is collected at two stages. First, Client exit interview (CEI) data are collected among high FP client volume SDPs within each º£½Ç»»ÆÞ country at each annual phase of data collection, using a systematic sampling strategy to interview female family planning clients leaving facilities on the day of the SDP interview. Second, in some countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, and Uganda), phone-based follow-up interviews with the same clients are conducted 4-6 months after each annual phase. Separate datasets are generated for CEI baseline and CEI follow-up surveys in relevant geographies. Measures in CEI baseline and follow-up surveys include: quality of care indicators for family planning services and contraceptive counseling, user experience with current method, as well as contraceptive use, discontinuation, and future use. CEI baseline and follow-up datasets can be merged, and can also be linked to SDP datasets. For example, the CEI, CEI follow-up, and SDP data can all be merged to examine the impact of service quality at the time of initial visit on future contraceptive discontinuation.
4. GPS Datasets
º£½Ç»»ÆÞ2020 GPS data include one GPS coordinate per enumeration area, not at the household level. In order to protect confidentiality of survey respondents, the GPS coordinate is displaced by a random amount in a random direction, and the displacement methodology is available: English, French. The dataset contains the enumeration area ID, which can be used to match the EA-level GPS coordinates with the household/female dataset. Geographic information provided in the household/female dataset is limited to the enumeration area, the primary sampling unit, and the largest regional identifier (region, state, county, etc.), allowing for national and sub-national estimates. Request access to GPS data here.
Data Codebook
Users can download º£½Ç»»ÆÞ Ethiopia and º£½Ç»»ÆÞ2020 household and individual female data codebooks and service delivery point data codebooks here. The codebook provides the wording of each question, type of question, variable label and option choices, and coding. The codebook will be adapted for each country survey as certain questions may change by country and by survey. Codebooks for the GPS data are provided within the approved dataset zipped file.
File Types
Datasets will be provided in a zipped file in two formats, .csv and .dta (version 12 or higher). Codebooks will be provided as an Excel document and questionnaires provided in .pdf format.
Data Use Policy
Due to limited capacity to respond to individual requests, user support will not be provided. Analytic access to data is limited to the specific uses specified by individual(s) who are approved. Partnering institutions reserve the right to limit access to select indicators and/or complete datasets.
The dataset will not be shared or redistributed to other users or researchers. The data will not be used for any marketing or commercial venture. The data will be treated as confidential, and users should make no effort to identify any individual, household, or enumeration area in the survey. No results will be published in which communities or individuals can be identified. Datasets will be used with proper citations.
