Dr. Georges Guiella, Performance, Monitoring and Accountability 2020’s (ǻ2020) Francophone Africa Hub Director and Principal Investigator for ǻ2020-Burkina, has been appointed to serve on the Scientific Advisory Panel for International Union for the Scientific Study of Population’s (IUSSP) new project on Family Planning and Urban Policy Development in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

This project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will support early-to-mid career researchers in these regions to conduct research to produce evidence on the effects of family planning and fertility change on urban welfare, ultimately aiming to inform the urban policy agenda.

“This is another significant achievement reflecting Dr. Guiella’s long-standing commitment to advancing family planning research to inform policies that will improve health among those most in need,” said Dr. Scott Radloff, ǻ2020 Project Director.

Dr. Guiella holds an MSc in Demography from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) and a Ph.D. in Demography from the University of Montréal (Canada). Currently a professor-researcher and lecturer in demography at Institut Supérieur des Sciences de la Population, he is also the Head of the Research Division “Population and Health” at this institute. His research interests focus on reproductive health generally and in particular: family planning, adolescent and youth reproductive health, as well as maternal, neonatal, and infant health. He also has expertise in evaluating strategies in the reduction of maternal and infant mortality in sub-Saharan Africa.
